Decluttering your home is among one of the most important steps in preparing for a move. Even if you are not moving house, decluttering your home can be a very worthwhile but for some people this may prove to be a difficult task.

  • Here are some tips for decluttering your home:Allocate blocks of time to decluttering. Like you would allocate time to clean your home weekly, try to set aside some time specifically for decluttering. Plan to declutter one room at a time and not all at once so that you do not feel overwhelmed.
  • When beginning a declutter session, set yourself up with a bag for trash, a box for items to be sold/donated, a box for storage items and a box (or pile) of items that you need to find a permanent place for in your home.
  • When deciding what to throw away/get rid of, ask yourself these three simple questions: “When was the last time I used this?”, “Do I really need this?”, “Will I regret getting rid of this later?”. A rule of thumb when decluttering your wardrobe should be: If you have not worn it within the past two years, you probably won’t wear it in the next two.
  • Once you have filled your trash bags or your boxes of items to sell/donate, try to get rid of them as soon as possible to avoid creating more clutter with your boxes of clutter.

These are tips that may work for some people but you might have a more effective way that works just for you. Tackling one area/room at a time can make the task less daunting but if you have the motivation to declutter your entire house in one weekend then more power to you!

Another thing you can do if you have children is to create a game out of decluttering. Kids are among the biggest little hoarders out there but they are easily persuaded (most of the time). If you are finding difficulties in getting your little ones to throw away their outgrown toys, it is a good idea to teach them from an early stage to recognise items that they no longer use/are interested in. You might be able to encourage them to get rid of old items with the promise of a new, better item once they have helped with the decluttering.

Another fun idea for cleaning with your kids is to play ‘The Colour Game’. This game involves picking one colour and then going around the room and picking up everything that is that colour (this one worked on me when I was younger).

Once your house is clutter free, you will feel a huge relief and packing your things to move into your new home will be a much easier task.
