There are a lot of buzzwords and acronyms that come with utilities, which can trip up even the most energy-savvy individuals!

When diving into your recent gas bill, an acronym might pop up that keeps you stumped on what it stands for and why a series of numbers follow it, being your MIRN or DPI number. Thankfully, we know a thing or two about anything and everything to do with utilities, that includes gas and all its meter number wonders.

These numbers are separate from your NMI number which is an identifier for your electricity meter, which can be found on your electricity bill. For more information on your NMI number, check out our article all about your National Meter Identifier.

For more information on meters around the house, we have articles on gas meters, electricity meters and smart meters that you can check out after this one.

What’s a MIRN/DPI?

The Meter Installation Reference Number or Meter Installation Registration Number (MIRN) is the identifying number displayed on your gas meter. This number can be found on your gas bill if you reside in Victoria (VIC), Queensland (QLD), or South Australia (SA).

This number is separate from your regular meter number which is simply used to identify the type of meter used at the property.

The Delivery Point Identifier (DPI) is the gas meter number acronym used by those residing in New South Wales (NSW), which can be found on your estimated bill similar to the MIRN counterpart.

Your energy retailers will use the MIRN/DPI to measure meter data and provide an accurate gas meter read. Access to the MIRN/DPI also allows the service provider to identify the meter and own meter types at your supply address and tell your existing retailer about any transfer to a new gas connection with ease.

Where is my MIRN/DPI?

The best way to spot your MIRN is to head to the second page of your gas bill and look for the 11-digit number starting with the number 5, as to differentiate between the MIRN and the gas meter number. You can also spot the number on your property’s natural gas meter.

Your MIRN number will feature 11 unique numbers that are assigned to your gas service as a means to identify your gas delivery point as part of the natural gas network. For example, your MIRN will look similar to this: 50123456789.

Your DPI number will be similar to a MIRN, as you head to the second page of your gas bill and look for the 10-digit number this time starting with the number 5.

The DPI number will feature 10 unique numbers that are assigned to your gas service as a means to identify your gas delivery point as part of the natural gas network. For example, your DPI will look similar to this: 5012345678.
